- November 2, 2005 - The Xavier women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. Unfortunately, the win was not enough to place the Musketeers among the top six teams in the Atlantic 10, meaning Xavier will miss next week’s conference tournament in Dayton. Seniors Molly Finnerty, Meredith Frendt, Laura Merkel, Shawn Reynolds, Kristen Ruehlmann, and Angie Scarlato were recognized in a ceremony with their parents before the start of the match. Schureck shut out in return to Dayton When men's soccer head coach Dave Schureck returned to his alma mater this season after serving as head coach of the rival Dayton Flyers since 2000, he knew the day would come when he would have to coach against his former players. That day was Friday, when a motivated group of Flyers spoiled Schureck's return to Dayton, handing Xavier a 4-0 loss. Dayton got on the board in the 38th minute, when they were awarded a penalty kick after Dasan Robinson was taken down in the penalty box. Terry Alvino converted on the shot to put the Flyers ahead for good. Volleyball overcomes rival Rams The women's volleyball team made their last home appearance at Cintas Center Saturday night and went out with a bang, as they defeated Rhode Island in five games. The ladies put on a senior night spectacular, showcasing their talent, determination, and heart in the victory over Rhode Island. Unfortunately, the week prior had not been so kind to the Musketeers, as they fell to Ball State Monday night and Dayton on Thursday before tacking another W onto their record on Saturday. On Monday night, the Muskies faced off against the Ball State Cardinals at home at Cintas Center where victory remained just out of their reach as they fell in three games with scores of 30-26, 30-23, and 30-26. With the loss, Xavier fell to 15-9 on the season and Ball State improved to 13-8. |
