Truce event cancelled due to safety

In a consensus decision, the community basketball game scheduled to occur in the Schmidt Field house on Sept. 17 was cancelled. The game’s purpose was to promote nonviolence between the communities of young people in Bond Hill and Avondale.

The event had been planned by the owners of Yep Young Entrepreneurs Stanley Newell and Lawrence Jones, in cooperation with Xavier administrators, Campus Police, Cincinnati Police, and various community leaders and churches. Xavier began meetings with the promoters in mid-August.

Co-Mentoring bridges generation gaps

On Sept. 16, Xavier University students visited The Duepree Community and The Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community as part of the first ever Co-Mentoring Project. The 25 students were paired with people living in the two retirement communities.

Though some of the students and adults met for the first time on Friday, many had already met. The students will visit the older adults at least twice before a final meeting in November on Xavier’s campus.

Xavier initiates university participation in Project Search

Starting this year Xavier will become the first university to ever participate in Project Search, a transition program that will prepare disabled high school seniors for future employment opportunities.

The 10 students already participating will be receiving on-the-job experience as they are immersed in a working environment.

So far, the students will be working in areas such as the physical plant, food service, technology support, Cintas Center, clerical support, library, and the mail room.
