Xavier celebrates the 36th season of the Xavier Music Series with a tribute to Rosemary Clooney
The series of concerts during the academic year begins on Sept. 9 in the Gallagher Student Center
A tribute to singer Rosemary Clooney kicks off the 36th season of the Xavier Music Series, which includes the Classical Piano Series, the Classical Guitar Series and the Masters of Swing Series.
John Heim, S.J., director of the Music Series, created the series in 1976 with five classical piano concerts. “In those early years, we had only a little money,” Heim said, “but we were satisfied with those five concerts.”
A few years later, Heim was approached by Clare Callahan of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. She asked him to add classical guitar concerts.
“She thought it was just unfair that the series was just classical piano,” Heim said.
Since then, the Music Series has added a Jazz Piano Series and a Jazz Guitar Series, which together make up today’s Masters of Swing Series. There are nine performances in the Piano Series and five in the Guitar Series. Among the seven groups performing in the Swing Series in addition to the Clooney Tribute are Randy Reinhart & Bill Gemmer’s small band, the Byron Stripling Band playing Blues and Gospel, the Faux Frenchmen Gypsy Jazz Quartet, Petra’s Recession Seven, Four Freshmen, and Ed Polcer and his Jazz All-Stars.
The Rosemary Clooney Tribute is being performed by Nancy James and accompanied by Hank Mautner’s Masterworks Jazz Orchestra. The concert is at 3:00 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Gallagher Student Center Theater.
Tickets for the Rosemary Clooney Tribute are $25 and can be purchased by calling 513-745-3161.
Single tickets for concerts in the series range from $22 to $25. A full season subscription is $129. Student tickets are $3. For more information about the music series, visit the music series website.
