Women in Psychology Speaker Series brings prominent women psychologists to campus
Upcoming speakers are focusing on women in the workplace and intimate partner violence
The Women in Psychology Speaker Series continues in February and March with presentations by prominent female psychologists on issues of importance to women. The series, made possible by a grant from Xavier’s Women of Excellence Giving Circle, began in January with a presentation by Ann Kearney-Cooke, PhD, director of the Cincinnati Psychotherapy Institute, on eating disorders and body image.
On Feb. 2., Robin Arthur, PhD, chief psychologist of the Lindner Center and adjunct professor at Xavier, presents Climbing the Ladder in Heels: Strategies for the Working Woman. The talk takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Conaton Board Room in Schmidt Hall.
Arthur has received Xavier University's Bieliauskas Thesis of the Year Award. Her research includes investigating primary care physicians' abilities to address psychosocial issues with their patients, depression in women, women in the welfare system, eating disorders and growth hormone, and values-based leadership training for adolescents. Her professional work has appeared in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and the Journal of Child & Adolescent Pharmacology, among others.
On March 15, Nadine Kaslow, PhD, professor and chief psychologist at Emory University School of Medicine, is discussing Intimate Partner Violence: What Can We Do To Make a Difference? The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Cintas Center Banquet Room 2.
Kaslow’s current research focuses on the treatment of intimate partner violence and suicidal behavior in African American women, and also on helping families cope with the loss of a loved one to suicide. She has produced more than 230 publications on the assessment and treatment of family violence, assessment and treatment of depression and suicide in youth and adults, couples and family therapy, women’s mental health, pediatric psychology, and supervision and training of psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows.
Xavier students, alumni and the public are invited to attend these thought-provoking lectures. For more information, please visit the Women of Excellence web site. To RSVP for these events, please contact Donna Kunkel at email@example.com.
