5K BalderDash to Raise Funds for Children"s Cancer Research

10/23/09

TheXavier University Children’s Charities Club is sponsoring the BalderDash, a 5K race to raise money for Children’s Cancer Research. It will be on Saturday November 14, 2009 beginning 9:00 am. Race day registration begins at 7:00 am at the Cintas Center.  Registration forms are at www.balderdash.itsgud.com

Registration is $15.00 in advance or $20.00 the morning of the race. The fee includes race entry and a commemorative t-shirt. Walkers and those who opt to “sleep-in” are welcome to join in.  “Sleep-in” participants pay the $15 and receive a shirt, but may sleep through the walk. All are encouraged to join the walk and visibly show support for the cause. 100% of fees go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraiser for childhood cancer research. In nine years, events have taken place in 18 countries and 48 of the United States, contributing over $50 million. Xavier’s Children’s Charities Club hopes to raise $7,000 for St. Baldrick’s through this race and future events. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is one of the many research facilities that receive funds.

The BalderDash is Xavier's first sanctioned, city-wide 5k Run/Walk for Charity. St. Baldrick's encourages volunteers to shave their heads in solidarity with pediatric cancer patients. All male senators in Xavier’s Student Government Association have agreed to shave their heads as have several female students. Hair will be donated to Beautiful Lengths, which provides wigs free of charge to cancer patients.

Children’s Charities Club founder and president, Kristen Alpaugh, is a junior psychology major from Clinton, NJ (08809). Working with friends of hers from the University of Delaware, the BalderDash site is housed at itsgud.com. A grant from the University of Delaware created Itsgud.com as a host for things that are working toward making the world a better place.
