Program refers to applications and technologies used to gather, provide access to, and analyze data and information about company operations

The Williams College of Business MBA program is offering a new concentration in business intelligence beginning Jan. 14, 2008. The program is the first of its kind in the Tri-state area. Registration for the classes begins Nov. 20.

Business intelligence is one of the hottest trends in business computing. It refers to applications and technologies that are used to gather, provide access to, and analyze data and information about company operations. These systems can help companies have a more comprehensive knowledge of the factors affecting their business no matter what the industry.

Top media outlets such as MSNBC.com, Newsweek, InformationWeek and the Philadelphia Business Journal have reported that business intelligence is increasingly being used to support strategic decision-making, rather than relying only on the “gut level management” that has dominated industry.

A 2007 Gartner’s report lists business intelligence applications as the number one technology priority of chief information officers.

“We are excited to offer this new concentration with a faculty who are among the most respected business intelligence researchers in the country,” says Elaine Crable, chair of the department of management information systems.

The concentration was designed with input from corporate partners such as Kroger, Western Southern, P&G, Fifth Third, Harlan Inc., and many other members of Xavier’s management information systems board of executive advisers.

The courses for the new concentration include Introduction to Business Intelligence, Data Mining and Database & Warehousing.

“Our students will gain hands-on experience managing, mining and modeling data," says Greg Smith, assistant professor. "These skills are invaluable in today’s business world.”
