University commencement set for May 19
Procter and Gamble's A.G. Lafley and Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth are commencement speakers
05/17/07Xavier's 169th commencement ceremonies are taking place Saturday, May 19, at the Cintas Center. The undergraduate Class of 2007 receive their diplomas beginning at 9:00 a.m. Graduate degrees are being awarded at 2:00 p.m.
Xavier is awarding 1,000 undergraduate diplomas and 1,100 graduate diplomas. This includes all students who have graduated during the last academic year.
A Baccalaureate Mass is being held prior to commencement on Friday, May 18, at 8:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains located on the corner of 8th and Plum Streets in downtown Cincinnati.
A.G. Lafley, chair, president and CEO of the Procter & Gamble Co. is the undergraduate commencement speaker. He is also being awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. During the undergraduate ceremony, Leo Klein, S.J., Xavier vice president for mission and ministry and a professor in the department of theology, is being awarded the Paul L. O’Connor Leadership Award. Also during the undergraduate ceremony, Norman A. Murdock, Class of 1955, is being honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of his outstanding service to Xavier and society, and of his life reflecting Jesuit values.
Xavier’s graduate commencement speaker is Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, civil rights activist and, more recently, an advocate for the homeless. A video reflecting on Shuttlesworth’s life is being shown, and he is receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. During the graduate ceremony, John L. Muething, Class of 1943, is being honored with the Leadership Medallion in recognition of his professional achievements, his generosity in giving back to the community he loves and his dedication to Catholic, Jesuit education.
