Students trying to break record to raise money in the fight against cancer

Relay For Life begins Friday, April 20, and runs through Saturday, April 21

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life takes place on campus beginning on Friday, April 20, at 6:00 p.m. and runs through Saturday, April 21, at noon. This event celebrates cancer survivorship and raises funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and service. The theme of the 18-hour event this year is “Giving Cancer the Boot.”

Relay For Life brings together teams from around the Xavier community, local businesses and families for camaraderie, food, music and entertainment and a night under the stars. Team members take turns walking or running on a track located on the green space in front of the Gallagher Student Center. At 10:00 p.m. on Friday, there will be a luminaria ceremony honoring those who have suffered from cancer.

The goal of this year’s relay is to have more than 33 teams and raise more than $35,000 for the American Cancer Society. Participants have a chance to win prizes and giveaways. Participants can pay a $10 registration fee to either a team or at the American Cancer Society meeting. Full teams may enter for a $100 registration fee. Cancer survivors pay no fees to participate in the relay.

“Relay is much more than a walk around a track," says Katie Godby from Xavier’s Relay For Life. "It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived."

The American Cancer Society is the leading nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
