04/16/07

During the first five days in May, the department of music ensembles, chamber groups and soloists are performing concerts each night as part of their spring music festival. All events are open to the public. Some are free; others have an admission charge.

The Milton Street Chamber Music Society of Cincinnati, a versatile duo performing works from diverse styles and composers, performed Monday night, and Xavier's women chorus and several chamber groups performed popular music from three different countries on Wednesday. Other concerts include:

  • Thursday, May 3, 7:30 p.m.: The night opens in Gallagher Student Center with the Huffman Prairie Winds Quintet, one of four classical chamber ensembles within the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight, and continue with the Xavier University symphonic wind ensemble under Ronald Montgomery. The night culminates with the Xavier chamber orchestra under Dale Swisher. This concert is free, but a donation of $2 for students/$5 for adults is appreciated.
  • Friday, May 4, 7:30 p.m.: The Xavier University Vocal Chamber Ensemble and Concert Choir will present their spring concert in Bellarmine Chapel, under the direction of Tom Merrill, music department faculty member. The admission charge for this event is $2 for students and $5 for adults.
  • Saturday, May 5, 7:30 p.m.: A free country concert in Gallagher Student Center by Xavier senior Dana Hunter. She is partnering with several instrumentalists, including guitarist Dr. Oliver Birckhead, director for the McGrath Health and Counseling Center, and Molly Finnerty, Xavier alumna, who is adding her fiddle. This is a night of country classics, current hits and a few original songs. After this performance, join the band for a party in Ryan’s Pub.
