02/01/07All Ireland champion on both concertina and uilleann pipes Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin is speaking at Xavier University on Friday, Feb. 9, at 3:00 p.m. in the Conaton Board Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Ó hAllmhuráin’s is delivering the talk “A Nation Once Again: The Use and Abuse of Traditional Music as a Conduit of Irish National Identity.” Originally from County Clare, he is widely acknowledged as the finest concertina player resident in America, in addition to being one of the world’s foremost authors and folklorist on Celtic music.
Author, ethnomusicologist, anthropologist, and professional musician, Ó hAllmhuráin is the Smurfit Stone Professor of Irish Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In addition to winning the Ireland championships, he has produced 10 CDs, one DVD, two films, two books, and 58 papers and presentations.
