Third annual Crosstown Preachout taking place two weekends in February
Members from Xavier, University of Cincinnati are visiting one another's Catholic liturgy
02/01/07For the third year, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati are taking part in the Crosstown Preachout. The event takes place over two weekends in February: Sunday, Feb. 11 and Sunday, Feb. 18. On each of those days, members of one university are visiting the other’s Catholic liturgy.
University President Michael J. Graham, S.J., presided at the 5:30 p.m. liturgy on Feb. 11 at St. Monica-St. George, 328 W. McMillan St.
On Feb. 18, Al Hirt, OFM, pastor of St. Monica-St. George, is presiding at the 10:00 p.m. liturgy at Bellarmine Chapel on the Xavier campus.
In addition to the Mass, each school is hosting a dinner and/or reception before or after the service. The UC campus ministry is hosting Fr. Graham and approximately 40-45 students for dinner immediately following the liturgy at St. Monica-St. George. After Fr. Hirt says the 10:00 p.m. Mass at Xavier, there will be a cookies and milk reception.
The Crosstown Preachout was created two years ago as a way of bringing together students from both universities in a spirit of faith and companionship.
“In the past, we’ve held the Preachout in conjunction with the Crosstown Shootout, but this year that was impossible since the game took place in December,” says Kelly Albainy-Jenei from Xavier’s campus ministry. “As an alternative, we scheduled this year’s Crosstown Preachout in conjunction with the Crosstown Helpout (which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 10), an event that gives students from both universities a tremendous opportunity to join together for a greater good.”
“We think it is a wonderful way for the students to reach out to each other in a shared faith experience,” adds Michael Schreiner, UC campus minister. “Bringing together our Catholic communities for Eucharist and fellowship is a great blessing for all involved.”
