Professor Emeritus of English Joe Wessling, a 34-year veteran in the fields of language and literature, is taking Lewis Carroll’s Alice to places she’s never been before in his new book Alice in Academe and Other Stories.

In the novella, Alice, now a young woman, reappears as a doctoral student in English at a major American university and experiences a new kind of wonderland with many echoes of the first Wonderland. Wessling’s goal is to restore common sense to the upper echelons of academe.

Since his retirement in 2000, Wessling continues to serve Xavier as a volunteer program facilitator in Ignatian Programs. He resides in Cincinnati with his wife, Adelaide.

The book is illustrated by Xavier art instructor Holly Schapker. Her artistic career is distinguished by scholastic and professional achievements including private and public commissions, grants and scholarships. Her artwork has been displayed in numerous galleries and has been seen in juried art shows throughout the nation. She also recently completed a mural commemorating the 175th anniversary of Xavier University.
