Xavier's equestrian team won its first tri-colored Reserve Champion Team ribbon at the intercollegiate horse show at Morehead State University on Nov. 11. The team finished behind Miami of Ohio in winning Reserve Champion, from a field of eight regional teams.

Xavier got outstanding performances from Allison Hritz, a senior from Cleveland, Matt Beachy, a junior from Louisville, Sarah Krings, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Whitney Fischer, a junior from Ft. Mitchell, Ky., Whitney Collette, a sophomore from Cincinnati and Brighid Sullivan, a senior from Phoenix.

Kevin Keller, a freshman from Crestline, Ohio, and Jillian Eddy, a junior from Cincinnati, both rode well in their first collegiate shows. Krings, Beachy and Collette all contributed blue ribbons during the weekend.

Halfway through the collegiate equestrian season Xavier is in third place in the region, behind Miami and University of Kentucky.

“We’ve progressed as well as we could have possibly, realistically expected," says coach Jim Arrigon. "We have a long way to go to catch the big guns, but we’re well on our way.”

The next competition is the Holiday Tournament of Champions Invitational Horse Show, Dec. 3 in Syracuse, N.Y. Xavier is the only team from the Midwest competing, with most of the field of 20 teams coming from the East Coast, New England and the Southeast.

Following that invitational and Christmas break, the team begins preparing for a February trip to Lexington and Midway College. On March 3-4, 2007, Xavier is hosting its first show, in collaboration with University of Kentucky, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Georgetown.

The equestrian team is in only its third semester of existence, and is actively recruiting new members, both from within the University community and from amongst high school recruiting classes. The team needs riders at any experience level. Interested riders should contact Gwen Arrigon at garrigon@hotmail.com or 513 839-5619.
