Sara Knutson, who earned a double major in theology and finance, spoke at the undergraduate commencement ceremony at the Cintas Center on Saturday as the 2006 Xavier University valedictorian.

Knutson, who maintained a 4.0 grade point average, says she started her Xavier career as a theology major, but after taking several business classes decided to turn her business minor into a finance major. Earlier this spring she received the Excellence in Finance Award during Xavier’s All Honors Day Academic Convocation.

Knutson, 22, hopes the background in theology and finance helps her pursue a career in youth ministry.

“I’ve been involved in youth ministry since high school,” she says. “My faith is very important to me as is pursuing a career that helps people with their faith and getting in touch with God.”

Now that she has graduated, Knutson plans to take a five-week trip to Europe. Upon her return she is taking a long-term volunteer position with Camp Gray, a Catholic summer camp and year-round retreat center in central Wisconsin, where she will lead retreats for students from fifth through twelfth grades.

Knutson was also a member of Xavier’s pep band, active in campus ministry and was a resident assistant. She says what she learned during her time at Xavier went beyond what she found in books.

“Xavier really made me aware of the fact that things are not black and white, that there are never easy answers, and to be at peace with that,” she says. “I also learned that God is asking the questions and that we are always learning and growing.”
