New Cincinnati Reds CEO speaks at business event in Schiff Family Conference Center
Bob Castellini discusses the business of baseball at annual Distinguished Speakers Series on May 3
05/01/06Robert Castellini, chairman of the Castellini Co. and chief executive officer of the Cincinnati Reds, closed out the inaugural season for the Williams College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series on Wednesday, May 3.
Speaking to a luncheon gathering of more than 400 executives, faculty, students and staff in the Duff Banquet Center in the Cintas Center, Castellini discussed team history and the "generational phenonmenon" of passion that binds Reds' fans of all ages. He also examined the team's growth from the standpoint of a business model, tracing four stages from its enterpreneurial beginnings to its current level of maturity.
"The issue they face (the Reds) is that they must reinvent themselves, tear down parts of the organization, step back into these earlier stages and rebuild," he said. "Fortunately the Reds are a monopoly ... but they must compete with all other entertainment venues for entertainment dollars."
As prime examples of this reinvention, Castellini pointed to changes to the club's management. He also discussed what he characterized as the administrative and entrepreneurial sides of team operations.
