Community Action Day highlighted by barbecue with Evanston community
Students visiting elderly residents, doing yard work for low-income families, learning about social justice issues affecting community
03/22/06Hundreds of students are showing the true unity of the University community on Saturday, March 25, by performing service work as part of Community Action Day 2006. Students are gathering at 9:00 a.m. at the Gallagher Student Center before heading out into the local community.
“The students will spend about three hours doing such things as visiting elderly residents, doing yard work for low-income populations and learning about social justice issues affecting our community around us,” says Tom Nemcek, a senior and Community Action Day co-director. In all, the students are visiting about 15 agencies and organizations.
This year, Community Action Day is hosting a special BBQ with members of the Evanston community. Evanston residents are invited to the Xavier campus for a free BBQ and free t-shirts. Other events planned at the BBQ include Bingo, a DJ and face-painting. The BBQ starts at 1:00 p.m. on the campus green space near the residential mall.
