Crosstown Helpout grows into one of area's largest volunteer events
Hundreds expected at to gather at University of Cincinnati on Feb. 4
02/02/06Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati may be opponents on the basketball court, but both schools are cooperating rather than competing Saturday, Feb. 4, for the 9th annual Crosstown Helpout.
Students, staff, alumni and friends of each university are gathering at UC's Tangeman University Center before heading out to the local schools and agencies where they work until about 2:00 p.m. More than 1,200 volunteers are expected to visit area schools and community agencies to paint walls, wax floors, clean windows, pick up trash, sort clothes and build bookshelves.
Last year, despite an ice storm, volunteers showed up to help out at 47 schools and agencies in Norwood, Clifton, Newport, Milford, Batavia, Evanston and Over-the-Rhine. They used 450 to 500 gallons of paint from Glidden Paint and Home Depot provided everything from rollers, pans, tape and ladders to t-shirts and just about anything a school or agency asked for to build bookcases, a locker room and more.
The Crosstown Helpout has grown into one of the biggest volunteer events in the Greater Cincinnati area. As the name implies, the event is a take-off on the Crosstown Shootout basketball game between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.
Volunteers have a chance to win prizes, including tickets to next year’s Crosstown Shootout basketball game.
