Hundreds of students take part in Community Action Day 2005
Students perform service work in local communities, learn about social justice
11/03/05Hundreds of students are showing the true unity of the Xavier community on Saturday, Nov. 5, by performing service work as part of Community Action Day 2005. Students are gathering at 9:00 a.m. at the Gallagher Student Center before heading out into the local community.
“The students will spend about three hours doing such things as visiting elderly residents, raking leaves for low-income populations, and learning about social justice issues affecting our community around us,” says Tom Nemcek, Xavier senior and Community Action Day co-director. In all, the students are visiting about 15 agencies and organizations. The students return to Xavier about 12:30 p.m. for lunch and a discussion of local social justice issues.
This semester's Community Action Day is sponsored by Recruiting Services International, Ltd., a recruiting firm in Cincinnati whose owners are Xavier alums. Paul Wehner, senior RSI recruiter and Xavier Class of 1969 alumnus, is the main contributor for the event.
