Men's basketball team picks up 12th straight victory
Musketeers overcome poor defense, hot-shooting Duquesne team to escape with 80-78 overtime win
The 13th-ranked Xavier Musketeers overcame the combination of poor defense and a hot-shooting Duquesne University basketball team to escape with their 12th straight victory on Wednesday night, 80-78 in overtime.
We werent very good tonight, said head coach Thad Matta, but we were able to make some big plays down the stretch to pull out the win. I didnt think our effort was there. We couldnt guard a chair tonight. But Im happy to get out of here with a win. Duquense has played a lot of very good teams very tough here.
Xavier, which had a 76.5 percent free throw average going into the game, shot just 58.3 percent from the free throw line, including 2-of-6 in the overtime period. All five Xavier starters, though, scored in double figures to help ease the misses. Senior All-American David West led the way with game highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lionel Chalmers added 17 points, while freshman guard Dedrick Finn had 16 and four assists. Anthony Myles contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Romain Sato had 15 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
Xavier raised its record to 21-4 overall and 12-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Duquesne fell to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in the A-10.
Xavier hosts George Washington University on Saturday, March 1, at Cintas Center at 2:00 p.m.
