University honors victims of Sept. 11
Thousands of flags are being placed on Academic Mall to remember those who died in attacks
08/29/05Nearly 3,000 American and other flags covered the Academic Mall in honor of the victims of Sept. 11. The flags were placed beginning around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, and remained on the mall until Sept. 11. The display began near Bellarmine Chapel and ended near McDonald Library.
There were 2,955 American flags and 40 flags from other countries to remember those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93.
The event was sponsored by College Republicans, but co-chair and junior history major Ted Brown says the memorial is not a political statement of any kind.
“Last year there was a smaller event with posters and a banner,” he says. “We wanted to do something much larger this year to convey the tremendous magnitude of the tragedy, a feeling I think some people may have lost in the past four years.”
