Esack gives Brueggeman lecture tonight

Farid Esack offers African-Muslim view of Sept. 11

Farid Esack, the 2002 chair of the Brueggeman center for interreligious dialogue, is offering a reflection on the events of Sept. 11 from a progressive African-Muslim perspective. His “The Terrible Twins” lecture examines the terrorist attacks, their effect on the Muslim faith and how understanding the past tragedy challenges our faith. The lecture takes place on Monday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cintas Center. Esack was appointed as the commissioner for gender equality in South Africa by the country’s president, Nelson Mandela. With a Ph.D in Qur’anic Hermeneutics from the University of Birmingham, Esack was a senior lecturer in religion at the University of the Western Cape. He has been published many times, including the books “Qur’an, Liberation and Pluralism, On Being a Muslim” and “An Introduction to the Qur’an.” Since the early 1980s, a theologian or religious scholar is brought to the University annually to teach and serve as chair of the Brueggeman center. What began as a lecture series has developed into a yearlong position with the ethics, religion and society program. The Brueggeman Center holds an annual lecture to provide an opportunity for the community to hear and interact with the recipients of the Brueggeman chair. This event is open to the public and free.
