Relay for Life raises $26,000 for American Cancer Society
Participants brave nasty weather to honor those who have battled cancer, including the late James E. Hoff, S.J.
04/22/05More than 200 students and others braved cold, nasty weather to take part in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life on Friday, April 1, through Saturday, April 2. The event raised $26,000. During the relay, members of 27 walking teams took turns walking around a "track" on the residential mall in front of the Gallagher Student Center. Although the event was scheduled to last for 18 hours, the event ended two hours early because of the weather.
At the heart of the event was an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have battled cancer, both survivors and caregivers. This year 12 cancer survivors attended the relay. Xavier students also dedicated the event to the memory of the late James E. Hoff, S.J., chancellor and former president of Xavier University. Hoff died July 23, 2004, after a four-month battle with cancer.
The Josh Holmes Band performed while participants walked, donating their time and 50 percent of the profits from merchandise sold at the event.
The Xavier group is still accepting donations for the American Cancer Society. The goal is to raise a total of $35,000.
