Town Hall meeting takes place at University
Congressman Rob Portman and Social Security commissioner James Lockhart discuss Social Security reform
02/22/05Congressman Rob Portman and James B. Lockhart, deputy commissioner for Social Security, are holding a University Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Students from the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University will join Xavier students to participate in the meeting.
“We are honored to have Mr. Lockhart in town to discuss the reforms in Social Security and to answer questions from the students,” said Congressman Portman. “One of our biggest priorities in Congress is to modernize Social Security. As we begin that task, it’s critical that we hear from the people it will affect the most—our young people. The University Town Hall will be a unique opportunity to do just that.”
The Town Hall meeting will include a presentation from Portman and Lockhart, and an opportunity for students to ask questions. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Philosophy, Politics and the Public honors program.
The Social Security Administration, the largest independent federal agency, administers the Social Security retirement, disability and survivors insurance programs that pay $430 billion annually in benefits to almost 46 million beneficiaries, as well as the Supplemental Security Income program that provides $31 billion in assistance to over 6 million people with limited income and assets.
The meeting will be held from 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Conaton Board Room on the second floor of Schmidt Hall.
