Crosstown Shootout fever sweeps country
Xavier and UC fans and Alumni gather together nationwide to watch the Musketeers take on the Bearcats
02/01/05From New York City to Los Angeles, Xavier and University of Cincinnati fans and alumni gathered together on Thursday, Feb. 10, to cheer on their favorite basketball team during the annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.
The two Cincinnati schools went head to head at the University of Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena at the Shoemaker Center at 9:00 p.m. for one of the biggest basketball rivalries in the country.
Musketeer and Bearcat alumni and fans attended game-watching parties together in nearly 40 locations nationwide, including Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Tampa and St. Louis.
This is the fourth year alumni associations from both universities sponsored the Shootout get-togethers. Kevin Garry, director for Xavier alumni chapters, came up with the idea.
“When I started working at Xavier I noticed Xavier and UC had a lot of chapters in the same cities,” says Garry. “I thought it would be fun if the alumni from both schools got together for the big game. So I called UC’s alumni association and the viewing parties were born.”
“The joint Shootout watching parties represent a fascinating mixture: social occasion, athletic event, test of wills, emotional rollercoaster,” says Phillip Lanham, UC alumni association program manager. “But above all, it’s a chance to reconnect and have a really good time, as long as your team wins.”
The gatherings are not only fun, but also bring together some interesting rivalries. For example, in Lima, Ohio, Bob Riepenhoff rooted for his alma mater Xavier while his wife, Tracey, cheered for the Bearcats.
“It’s a mixed marriage,” he says. “By the way, my daughter graduated from Xavier and my son graduated from UC. It really makes it fun.”
