Busy weekend for university sports

News on men's and women's basketball, swim team action

The University had a busy weekend of sports, as the men's basketball team rebounded from back-to-back losses by beating St. Bonaventure, 99-83, on Saturday, while the women's team won two games over the weekend, knocking off Duquesne, 65-57, on Friday night and beating La Salle, 73-54, on Sunday. Also over the weekend, the swim teams hit the water against the University of Maine in West Palm Beach, Fla. The men's team lost, 114-71, while the women's team won, 113-72. David West and Romain Sato led the way for the men's basketball team, scoring a combined 51 points. Sato scored 19 points in the first 12:30 of the game before finishing with 25 points, while West scored 26. West also grabbed 13 rebounds, giving him 1,089 rebounds for his career and moving him past Brian Grant into third on the University all-time rebounding list. The team also got strong performances from sophomore Keith Jackson, who scored a career high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, and Anthony Myles, who scored a career high 15 points. The Musketeers improve to 10-4 overall with the win and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They take on La Salle on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 8:30 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The women's team is also 10-4 on the season after its weekend wins. Senior guard Amy Waugh hit eight three-point shots on her way to scoring 29 points to lead the team over La Salle on Sunday, with a 17-point effort from freshman teammate Tara Boothe, who was named freshman of the week in the Atlantic 10 for the fourth time in the last five weeks. Reetta Piipari added 12 points and had a season-high nine assists. Alexis Henderson led the team's rebounding efforts for the sixth game in a row with eight. The win was the 400th in the 31-year history of the women's basketball program. The Musketeers are 400-374 all-time. The team picked up win 399 two nights earlier, as Waugh scored a season-high 31 points in the win over Duquesne. Boothe had 13 points and Piipari finished nine. The team plays again Friday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 19, against the University of Richmond and George Washington University. Both games are on the road.
