Basketball teams suffer losses
Men's team loses to Richmond, while women's team loses to Dayton in A-10 openers
Both the men's and women's basketball teams lost their Atlantic 10 Conference openers last night, with the men's team being upset by the University of Richmond at the Cintas Center and the women's team losing to the University of Dayton on the road.
The 67-59 loss to Richmond for the men's team
snapped a 17-game home court winning streak for the Musketeers, which was the ninth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. It also marks just the third loss ever for the Musketeers in their three seasons at the Cintas Center.
Xavier was up by nine at the half, 37-28, due largely to Romain Sato scoring 15 of his game-high 20 points. David West, who didn't play the last seven minutes of the first half because of foul trouble, added 10 points and 18 rebounds. Anthony Myles had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his career.
Richmond whittled away its deficit, though, and took the lead with 2:22 left in the game. The Musketeers fall to 9-4 on the season overall and 0-1 in the A-10.
The women's team is also 0-1 in the conference after losing to Dayton, 82-65
, despite a career high 28 points from freshman Tara Boothe. Reetta Piipari scored 11 for Xavier and Amy Waugh finished with 10. Their effort, though, barely matched the scoring of the Dayton guards, who hit a school-record 12 three-point shots. The Flyers shot 58.8 percent from the field for the game.
Both teams will try to rebound from the losses this weekend, with the men's team hosting St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The women host Duquesne on Friday, Jan. 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center.
