Xavier observes 15th anniversary of murdered priests

University hosts musical performances, speakers, reflections, films to commemorate eight assassinated in El Salvador

At dawn on Nov. 16, 1989, uniformed gunmen murdered six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her 15-year-old daughter at the University of Central America (UCA) in El Salvador. Twenty-six soldiers were later convicted for these deaths. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the assassination.

In remembrance, the University is hosting the Salvadoran musical group, Exceso de Equipaje, on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Bellarmine Chapel. There is also a reflection and speakers scheduled.

Exceso de Equipaje is lead by Guillermo Cuellar, the author of the Salvadoran Folk Mass and the Mesoamerican Mass. The groupis performing at UCA before coming directly to Xavier.

On Nov. 18 at 8:00 p.m. there is a showing of the film A Question of Conscience: The Murder of the Jesuit Priests in El Salvador on the third floor of the Commons. This 1990 film looks at the personal histories of the priests and their murderers, the history of El Salvador during the time, and the role and attitude of the church and UCA in Salvadoran society.

The events are sponsored by voices of solidarity, a student organization that focuses on peace issues in Latin America, Latin American studies, the office of mission and ministry, the office of student development, the department of theology, the Brueggeman center for dialogue, peace and justice programs and the international students society.
