Gun control debate comes to Xavier
College republicans sponsor councilman David Crowley and author John Lott, Jr., who hold opposing views on the topic
10/14/04Xavier’s college republicans are presenting a weighty debate on the topic “Gun Control—Pro or Con?” held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Schiff Family Conference Center. The debaters include David Crowley, a Cincinnati city councilman and gun control supporter, and John Lott Jr., author and second amendment advocate.
An advocate of gun control, Crowley was elected to Cincinnati City Council in 2001 and serves as the chairman of the Board of Education Cooperative Affairs sub-committee and vice chairman of the Community Development and Intergovernmental committee. He is also the president/CEO of Crowley’s Incorporated, a family-owned Irish pub established in Mt. Adams more than 65 years ago. Crowley earned a master’s degree in social work from Ohio State University and a second master’s in international affairs from George Washington University. He also served as president of the Mt. Adams business guild and as the chairman of the Mt. Adams annual blood drive.
Lott, an economist and author of More Guns, Less Crime and The Bias Against Guns, believes that more criminals would be deterred from committing crimes if more people carried concealed firearms. Lott is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and served as senior research scholar at Yale Law School and the John M. Olin visiting law and economics fellow at the University of Chicago Law School. He has a BA and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California Los Angeles.
