The Edward B. Brueggeman center for dialogue and department of theology, in cooperation with CET, is hosting a facilitated community dialogue on the PBS series, The Question of God: Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis.

The series is based on a book by Harvard professor Armand Nicholi, who has taught a course for more than 20 years comparing the diametrically opposed views of Freud and Lewis, two of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. As well as making immeasurable contributions to their fields of study, both men had something else in common—a lifelong preoccupation with some of life’s fundamental questions, such as: Is there a God? Is a moral sense of right and wrong innate?

After a one-hour screening of the series, Peter Block, local author, philosopher and community engagement specialist, is facilitating group discussions. The groups are examining the role faith and how our view of the world plays in our efforts to better our neighborhoods and the city of Cincinnati.

“The lives of Freud and Lewis are not only two of the most significant of the last century, but symbolize the ongoing tension between religion and science and the role this tension plays in the lives of each of us as we search for our sense of meaning and purpose,” says James Buchanan, director of the Brueggeman center. “We hope the discussion will help the participants to better understand not only the PBS series, but how these tensions are at play in their own lives.”

The dialogue takes place Tuesday, Sept. 28, 7:00 p.m., at the Schiff Family Conference Center. This event is free and open to the public. For more information about the event, please call 513 745-3922.

CET aired the first part of the series, The Question of God: Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, and the remaining part on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Check local TV listings for more information or log onto www.pbs.org/wgbh/questionofgod.
