Xavier hosting youth sports summit on campus next month
Summit examines youth sports methods and practices for parents and coaches
06/03/04Xavier University is hosting a youth sports summit next month to address issues such as overuse injuries, burnout, cheating, and sports violence and abuse. The goal of the summit, titled "Caution: Children at Play, Proceed with Care," is to identify appropriate youth sports methods and practices for parents and coaches.
“It is our belief that coaching education for parents and youth sport coaches is a crucial factor in creating a positive, growth-enhancing environment for children involved in youth sports,” said Ron Quinn, director of sports studies.
Quinn, who is speaking at the July 31 event, has taught and coached on all levels for 28 years. He has written extensively on youth soccer player development and coaching education and is one of the leading experts and innovators in the area of youth soccer player development in the United States.
Bob Bigelow, one of the foremost lecturers on youth sports, is the keynote speaker. Bigelow is a former member of the Boston Celtics and played basketball at the University of Pennsylvania. Bigelow has devoted several years to researching and lecturing about organized youth sports and their effect on children and adults.
Dr. Stephen Dailey, the primary care and youth sports injuries specialist with Wellington Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, is to discuss youth sports injuries. Chris Nelms, the Cincinnati director for Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program, is to talk about working with parents and athletes at the grassroots level.
The summit, co-sponsored by Wellington Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Schiff Family Conference Center in the Cintas Center. It is open to the public but is geared toward parents and coaches of children ages 14 and younger. The cost, which covers the summit and lunch, is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m.
