International advisors visit Xavier campus
College counselors from Peru and India tour Cincinnati as guests of local universities supporting Ohio Educates the World program
05/17/04Academic advisors from Peru and India are in Cincinnati this week as part of the Ohio Educates the World program. The visitors are being hosted by Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
The advisors counsel students in their respective countries about higher education study in the United States. They provide comprehensive, unbiased and up-to-date information on the full range of educational opportunities in the United States in accordance with the principles of ethical practice in overseas educational advising.
The goal of the program is to expand the advisors' knowledge of the United States’ system of higher education and help them see Ohio as an excellent destination for international students. This program is part of a weeklong set of activities during which more than 30 institutions will host 12 overseas educational advisors (OSEAS) from eight countries.
The group is attending a college fair in Columbus on Monday, May 17. At the fair, institutions will share information with the advisors. Later that day, two of the advisors, Swetha Muthanna from Bangalore, India, and Lurka Ramirez from Peru come to Cincinnati to visit the three university/college campuses and see some of the city.
"We are looking forward to a dialogue with the advisors during which we can share the wealth of educational opportunities both in Ohio and more specifically in Cincinnati," said Kathy Hammett, director of International Student Services at Xavier.
Funding for this effort has been provided by the U.S. Department of State; NAFSA: Association of International Educators, Region VI; the Ohio International Consortium; and individual institutions including Columbus State Community College, Cincinnati State, the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.
