Stacy Hoehn, a math and computer science major, is the 2004 Xavier University valedictorian. Hoehn will speak at the undergraduate commencement ceremony at the Cintas Center on Saturday, May 15, which begins at 9:00 a.m.

Hoehn maintained a 4.0 grade point average while attending Xavier. She was also very involved in BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health
of University Students), which promotes alcohol awareness through education and alcohol-free events. She served as treasurer, special events coordinator and president of the student club. She was also co-president of the math club, and she participated in the symphonic wind ensemble, pep band and campus ministry activities during her time at Xavier.

Hoehn also participated in many summer research experiences, including the Summer Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Miami University and the Director’s Summer Program at the National Security Agency. Hoehn was one of only a handful of students nationally to receive an invitation to work with this agency. There she learned and developed cryptomathematical theory. In June she will participate in another summer program, EDGE (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education), in Atlanta.

Hoehn entered Xavier as a math major, but added computer science to her studies after taking a computer science course that sparked her interest in the field. She will attend graduate school at Notre Dame this fall and plans to earn a Ph.D. in math, eventually becoming a mathematics professor at a research university.

“I really enjoyed my experience at Xavier,” she said. “I loved the personal attention that the faculty members were able to give me. They were very supportive of me throughout my time at Xavier, especially when I was trying to decide what to do with my future.”

Hoehn, 21, is from Cloverdale, Ohio, and graduated from Ottoville High School in Ottoville, Ohio. Her parents are Art and Kathy Hoehn. She has two sisters, Melissa, 25, and Ashley, 12.
