Men's golf wins major 18-team tournament
Team opens door for NCAA bid and highlights weekend's sports, which include record run for women's tennis, strong performances by baseball, women's golf
04/19/04The men’s golf team all but assured itself a place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament by winning the 18-team Robert Kepler Intercollegiate tournament by three strokes over the weekend on Ohio State University.
Freshman John Streibich led the team with a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish in third place, one shot behind the medalist, with a 54-hole total of 1-under 215. A two-time Atlantic 10 rookie of the week this year, Streibich’s season average now stands at 72.52, nearly two shots better than the school freshman record. Senior Miles Maillet earned his sixth top 10 finish of the year, posting a three-round total of 220. Maillet’s stroke average of 71.86 for the season is nearly one full shot better than the school record.
Xavier closes the regular season at First Energy Invitational in Akron, Ohio, on April 24-25 before beginning the A-10 Championship April 30-May 2.
The effort was part of a winning weekend for Xavier athletics. The baseball team won two of three games, the women’s golf team placed fourth in the 15-team Eastern Kentucky University Invitational and the women’s tennis team fought its way to the finals of the A-10 Championship with wins on Friday and Saturday before losing to the University of Richmond in the championship match on Sunday. The team recorded 21 wins on the season, the most in team history.
