Vibrant activities this week keep the mind, body and soul engaged

Spring 2004 Entrepreneurial Luncheon welcomes Cincinnati entrepreneurs Tony and Mary Miller

The secrets to success are revealed by entrepreneurs Tony and Mary Miller at the Spring 2004 Entrepreneurial Luncheon Series on Monday, March 29, from 12:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The Millers are the owners of Jancoa Janitorial Services, Inc., a company that won the 2003 Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce “Small Business of the Year” award. Registration is required. Frank Oppenheim, S.J., research professor in the department of philosophy, also shares his insights at the 46th annual Thomasfest on Thursday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kelley Auditorium. Oppenheim’s lecture is on “How to Live an Authentic Life.” A reception immediately follows the lecture. The event is free and open to the public. The week continues as the Xavier community works out the mind, body and soul in the “10 Days of Wellness” celebration hosted by the health and counseling center. The first event takes place on Monday,with an introduction to meditation by Kim Horn. The lunch and learn seminar takes place at noon in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 330. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. Light refreshments are being provided.

The workout continues on Tuesday, March 30, as the O’Connor Sports Center joins the celebration by offering free fitness classes to the Xavier community. On Tuesday, a free spinning class is offered at noon and on Wednesday, those interested can join a free power ball class at noon. Registration is required for both classes. Meditation is on the mind as participants take part in “Walking the Labyrinth: A Spiritual Walk for Wholeness” on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 330. Rosie Miller is hosting the seminar as she guides participants through a meditative labyrinth.

The cool-down begins on Wednesday as the health and counseling center hosts this week’s coffee hour at 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Gallagher Student Center. For more information on any of the above wellness events, call 513 745-3022.

While working out, students are also preparing for the future with a host of career workshops and seminars hosted by the center for career and leadership development.

The center offers advice to students on how to find employment after graduation with the professional experience program in the center’s office in the Gallagher Student Center. Sessions take place on Monday, from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and on Thursday, from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The center refers resumes of qualified students to employers to help them find part-time, internship and summer jobs.

On Wednesday, the center joins student support services for an interview workshop at 5:30 p.m. in Albers Hall, Room 103. Students are invited to participate in the workshop to sharpen their employment interview skills.

As the semester winds down, priority registration for summer and fall 2004 classes takes place this week. Summer registration begins on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and is open until summer classes begin on May 10. Fall registration begins on Monday as students register at assigned times listed on the Student Support Services website or outside the office of the registrar located in Alter Hall. Faculty, staff and students are making “Great Decisions” this week about contemporary Europe on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Romero International Center in the Gallagher Student Center. The foreign policy discussion is co-sponsored by the office of international student services and peace and justice programs. The book cost is $5. Also this week, the Brueggeman center for dialogue hosts a viewing of “Whale Rider” on Wednesday for a discussion on globalization and the environment. The viewing begins at 7:30 p.m. in Kelley Auditorium located in Alter Hall. Immediately following the film is a discussion. For more information, call 513 745-3922 or visit the Brueggeman web site.

Students are hosting a Spanish poetry night Thursday at 8:00 p.m. on the tenth floor of Schott Hall. Students are reciting their favorite songs and poems in hopes of receiving one of the cash prizes. Free food is also provided.

Thursday evening, students perform original one-act plays at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center theater. The Musketeers remain at home this week with two cross-town battles and a visit from Miami University. On Tuesday, the baseball team goes head to head against the RedHawks of Miami University at 3:00 p.m. On Wednesday, the baseball team meets the cross-town Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati at 3:00 p.m., while the women’s tennis team also meets the Bearcats on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
