Alumni nationwide to have a very Musketeer March

Pregame receptions and National Xavier Nights highlight upcoming chapter events

02/24/04

March Madness might mean one thing to college hoops fans, but to alumni across the country this year March's Musketeer Madness is extending beyond basketball with a month packed full of chapter events.

Leading the events, of course, is a pair of receptions during the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championships in Dayton, Ohio. Alumni, parents, prospective students, high school guidance counselors and friends are invited to don their blue and white and pile into the receptions, co-sponsored by the national alumni association and the office of admission.

The first is a semi-finals pregame reception on Friday, March 12, at 4:00 p.m. at the Mandalay Banquet Center, just a five-minute drive from the Dayton arena. The event includes complimentary hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and a raffle for Xavier keepsakes. Then on Saturday, March 13, Musketeer fans reconvene at the same location for a postgame reception after the A-10 championship game at 8:30 p.m.

But the packed alumni event calendar starts even before March Madness does. On Thursday, Feb. 26, the Washington, D.C., alumni chapter is joining its local Notre Dame alumni chapter for a private gallery tour of "The Philips Collection," featuring artwork by Milton Avery, Louis Kaufman and Duncan Philips. Afterward, participants have the option of attending a private cocktail hour. Registration for this event is closed.

Back in the Midwest, on Friday, Feb. 27, members of the Louisville chapter are invited to a free performance by Xavier's concert choir at the city's Holy Trinity Church. For more information, e-mail tim_graham@climateconditioning.com.

Then on Saturday, Feb. 28, Indianapolis alumni, family and friends convene for their annual bus trip back to campus to see the men’s basketball Musketeers take on the University of Duquesne Dukes at 2:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center. Those interested in the bus trip to Cincinnati can register online.

Also on Feb. 28, the Cincinnati chapter is hosting an Alumni Day event, and the Lima, Ohio, chapter is invited to join them. Area alumni and friends are invited to attend the game together, then stay for a postgame party at the James and Caroline Duff Banquet Center. The party features an appearance by Coach Thad Matta, door prizes, a cash bar, and activities for kids. For more information, contact Rosemary Tenoever at tenoever@xu.edu.

On Saturday, March 6, fans and prospective students can join the Delaware Valley alumni chapter at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown for a noon pregame reception before the men's basketball Musketeers take on the University of Temple Owls. The event features complimentary hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and a raffle for prizes. The first 12 alumni who register online each receive two free tickets to the game.

On Sunday, March 7, Florida's Sarasota/Bradenton chapter is gathering to watch the Cincinnati Reds take on the Minnesota Twins in a spring training Major League Baseball game. Any alumni vacationing in Florida at the time are invited to join. The day begins with a picnic at 11:00 a.m., and the game begins at 1:05 p.m. Those planning to attend can register online.

March also brings a scattering of National Xavier Nights across the country, which are designed to offer alumni a chance to find out firsthand about changes taking place at the University. Ali Malekzadeh, dean of the Williams College of Business, is the keynote speaker at upcoming National Xavier Nights at the Seattle and San Francisco chapters. He is speaking about the importance of ethics in corporate America. San Francisco alumni can join Malekzadeh at the San Mateo Marriott on Tuesday, March 16, for a reception at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Seattle alumni can join him Wednesday, March 17, at the Lemieux Library of Seattle University for a 6:00 p.m. reception and a 7:00 p.m. dinner.

All alumni events are open to the public, but require registration. To find out more about or to register for any upcoming events, call 800 344-4698, ext. 5, e-mail alumni@xu.edu, or visit the alumni web site.
