Musketeers sail past Explorers

Men's basketball team regroups, ties record for most lopsided win ever with 84-45 thumping of La Salle

01/22/04

The Xavier men's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak in an impressive manner on Wednesday, Jan. 21, crushing the La Salle Explorers, 84-45. The win tied the record for largest margin of victory with the Musketeers' 87-48 win over St. Peter's at the Cintas Center on Nov. 18, 2002, in the opening round of the Preseason NIT. It was also the largest margin of victory for Xavier in an Atlantic 10 Conference game.

After struggling with its shooting touch at times this season, the team had no problems finding its range, shooting 52.5 percent for the game, including an eight-for-18 performance from three point range. Senior guard Lionel Chalmers led the way with 22 points on eight-of-nine shooting, while senior Romain Sato added 12 points and six rebounds and sophomore Will Caudle had 12 points while hitting all four of his field goal attempts and all four of his free throw attempts. Caudle's points were part of 33 points the team got from its non-starters in the game.

Xavier, which is now 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the A-10, returns to action at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, when it hosts the University of Richmond.
