WVXU brings Solas to town
The Celtic band is performing at the 20th Century Theatre
The Celtic musical group Solas
is coming to the 20th Century Theatre in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Oakley on Sunday, Oct. 27, to perform its blend of traditional Celtic music with a contemporary sound. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and tickets cost $20.
The group, whose name means light in Gaelic, began as an Irish band in the 1960s but gradually added more electrical elements and American songs to their repertoire. The band is led by Seamus Egan
, who was born in the United States but lived in Ireland for a while. It was during that time that he learned to play music. His instruments include flute, banjo, mandolin, tin whistle and guitar. Egan is also the only American to win the prestigious All-Ireland music competition on four traditional music instruments.
The band members are American Winifred Horan on the fiddle and Irish natives Mick McAuley, vocalist and instrumentalist, Deidre Scanlan, lead singer, and Donal Clancy, guitarist. Solas collaborated with Grammy award-winning producer Neil Dorfsman on its most recent album, The Edge of Silence.
Its rare to find a group of such high-level musicians who are not only completely open to the idea of expanding their sound, but are also able to take those ideas to a new and exciting place, says Dorfsman.
Opening for the group is Kevin Crehan
performing traditional Irish music on the fiddle. Crehan has toured in the United States and Ireland and is featured on the Grammy-nominated album Heat, Dust and Dreams.
