Xavier honors Holy Family pastor as outstanding clergyman of the year
President Michael J. Graham, S.J., presents Fr. Steve Angi with presidential citation
01/16/04Xavier honored Fr. Steve Angi, pastor of Holy Family Parish in Cincinnati's East Price Hill neighborhood, as the outstanding clergyman of the year in Cincinnati for 2003. Angi was presented with a presidential citation from University President Michael J. Graham, S.J., during a clergy dinner at the Schiff Family Conference Center.
Angi was recognized for his dedication as a priest in the Cincinnati Archdiocese in the pastoral care of the dying, abused, mentally ill and troubled youth, as well as for his extraordinary missionary work on behalf of the Catholic Church in China.
Since returning to Cincinnati, Angi also has taken great pride in his new neighborhood by organizing cleanups, reporting abandoned buildings and keeping neighbors informed about issues. He is a volunteer Hamilton Country Probation Officer, handling about half a dozen cases. The people he works with report to him at his office at Holy Family.
"I didn't want to deal with just people who are writing bad checks," he says. "I want to deal with drug dealers and those who are causing the real trouble."
According to Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken's office, Angi's enthusiasm is spreading. Residents report feeling safer and have a better sense of pride in their neighborhood.
"Our neighborhood has changed since he's arrived," says Joeline Lecture, pastoral musician at Holy Family. "I've worked side by side with him in the pastoral care of the dying, the abused, the mentally ill and the innocent young. In contrast to his assertive work, 'tender,' 'compassionate' and 'healing' are the words that first come to me."
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Angi was ordained in 1985 and holds a master's degree in counseling from Wright State University. He has served at a variety of Greater Cincinnati locations, including St. Peter in Chains in Hamilton, Ascension Parish in Kettering, St. Gabriel's in Glendale, St. Agnes and St. Martin de Porres in Cincinnati, and as a guidance counselor at Seton High School. He also has traveled to do mission work in such places as Africa, Grenada and Australia. He recently returned from a trip to China, where he taught psychology and English and worked with the church.
