Sophomore Tara Boothe once again led the charge for the Xavier womens basketball team, scoring 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help the Musketeers hold off St. Bonaventure University, 62-61, on Friday afternoon. The team is now 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the A-10, with Boothe, last years A-10 freshman of the year, being the teams leading scorer in 12 of the 14 games.
Freshman Suntana Granderson added 22 points and six rebounds in the game for Xavier.
The Musketeers held a 32-26 lead at intermission, but St. Bonaventure rallied in the second half, taking the lead at one point. Free throws in the final 30 seconds from Boothe, Miranda Green and Alexis Henderson sealed the win, though, for the Musketeers.
The womens team now travels to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne University on Sunday, Jan. 11. The game is the Atlantic 10 game of the week and is televised on Fox Sports Net beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interestingly, the mens basketball team plays at the University of Rhode Island on Sunday, Jan. 11, and that game is also the A-10 game of the week. It comes on Fox Sports Net beginning at noon, putting the mens and womens basketball teams on TV back-to-back.
That game is the A-10 opener for the mens team, which collected a 8-4 record through its early non-conference schedule. Rhode Island is 12-3 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, already beating Fordham University, 73-59.
Xavier is 6-2 in its A-10 openers, including 3-1 on the road in home openers. This is the third time in four years Xavier begins its A-10 schedule on the road. The Musketeers lead the series against Rhode Island 9-2 and have won the last eight games against the Rams. This year, however, Xavier is just 1-3 on its opponents home court.
