Tara Boothe leads women’s basketball in win over Kentucky
Sophomore scores 29, while men’s team hits the court at Mississippi State on Saturday
12/11/03Sophomore forward Tara Boothe, in a return to her native Bluegrass State, led Xavier with a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds in the Musketeers' 75-60 win over the University of Kentucky Wednesday night.
Freshmen Miranda Green and Suntana Granderson also dominated the game, both scoring career highs of 13 and 12 points respectively for Xavier.
The first half of the game was a heated match with 12 lead changes and six ties. The Wildcats, currently 4-3 for the season, got off to an early 8-4 advantage, but the Musketeers countered with five unanswered points.
Kentucky then went up 22-19 with a little more than six minutes left to play in the first half. Again a 5-0 run allowed Xavier to regain the lead, taking its biggest lead of the half with 30-26 on the scoreboard and just 1:45 remaining on the clock. The Musketeers held at 33-30 at the break.
Green scored seven of Xaviers first nine points of the second half while the Musketeers used a 15-0 run in the first seven minutes of the second half to open up a 48-30 lead. Kentucky didnt cut the deficit to single digits in the remainder of the game.
Boothes double-double is the second of the year and the 12th of her career. The graduate of Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, Ky., was 11-for-17 from the field, and she hit both her three-point attempts.
Green scored 11 of her points at the foul line as Xavier went 20-for-28 at the charity stripe.
The Musketeers shot 52.1 percent (25-48) for the game. The Wildcats hit just 29.2 percent (19-65) overall, with a low 21.9 percent (7-32) in the second half. UK was 1-for-16 in the three-point range for the game.
Jenny Pfeiffer led the Wildcats with 21 points.
Xavier, 5-2, is taking a week off for final exams before hosting Lipscomb University on Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Cintas Center.
The mens team, 4-2, plays its next game at undefeated Mississippi State University, 6-0, on Saturday, Dec. 13. The 8:00 p.m. tipoff is being broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
