Campus clears out for Thanksgiving holiday

Men’s basketball, women's basketball, volleyball still in action during holiday break

Most students have abandoned campus this weekend as the University celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday, but not everyone is getting a rest. Basketball enthusiasts looking to take a break from the holiday football games can stay tuned as both the men's and women's teams hit the court this weekend, while the volleyball team finishes its season with a two-game tournament at Temple University.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, the men's basketball team looks to rebound from an upset loss to Ball State University on Tuesday with a difficult challenge—traveling to Indianapolis to take on Indiana University in The John Wooden Tradition at 4:00 p.m. This fourth annual event showcases four of the nation's premier collegiate basketball teams while celebrating the contributions of coach and Hall of Famer John Wooden. The game is being televised on the Fox Sports Network.

This is Xavier's second appearance in the tournament. It lost to the University of Missouri in 2001

Xavier is 3-1 on the season, while Indiana is 1-1. The two teams haven't met since 1993 when Indiana beat Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis.

The women's basketball team, meanwhile, hits the court Sunday, Nov. 30, for the annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout versus the University of Cincinnati at the Cintas Center at 1:30 p.m. Xavier began its season with two wins last weekend over the University of Louisville and IUPUI.

The first 1,000 fans at the game receive a Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout hat.

Prior to the game, the team also is setting up the Kroger Kids Zone in the west concourse of the Cintas Center, where the cheerleaders, Musketeer and Blue Blob will be entertaining kids. There will also be face painting, Pop-A-Shot games and tables for kids to make their own noise-makers and signs. This is one of four times the Kroger Kids Zone will be set up before women's basketball games this year. It will also be set up before the games on Feb. 6, Feb. 8 and Feb. 27.

And, the volleyball team ends its season by traveling to Philadelphia to play in the Thanksgiving Tournament at Temple University. The team takes on George Mason University Friday and Manhattan University on Saturday.

The team has struggled this year to a 14-15 record overall, while finishing the Atlantic 10 schedule with an 8-6 record and a loss to Temple in the tournament semifinals.
