Seniors lead men's basketball to preseason win
Team set to begin season at BCA tournament this weekend
11/10/03Five players scored in doubled digits as Xavier rolled to a 114-72 win over the 320 All-Stars in the Musketeers second and final exhibition game of the preseason on Sunday at the Cintas Center.
Xaviers senior trio of Lionel Chalmers, Romain Sato and Anthony Myles set the pace in the win. Chalmers scored a team-high 25 points, while Sato and Myles contributed 21 and 17, respectively.
Xaviers offensive efficiency was on display as the Musketeers pulled away early en route to a 64-41 lead at halftime. The 64 points in the first half were as many as Xavier tallied in seven games in 2002-2003.
In the opening period Xavier shot 61.5 percent from the field (making 24 of 39 shots) while turning the ball over just three times. Xavier recorded 15 first half assists.
Those trends continued in the second half. Xavier ended the game with a .553 shooting percentage (making 42 of 76 shots). The Musketeers committed just 11 turnovers in the contest, while holding a 49-26 edge in rebounding.
Xavier had 26 assists in the game, led by six each from Chalmers and sophomore Dedrick Finn.
Finn tallied 15 points, and freshman Justin Doellman added 10 for Xavier.
Sato, an All-American candidate, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Myles and sophomore Angelo Smith has seven rebounds apiece.
Although it wont count officially since it was an exhibition game, the contest did surpass a pair of Cintas Center records. Xaviers 114 points and the combined point total of 186 would be records for games played at the arena.
Xaviers record for most points scored at the Cintas Center is 108, set against Long Island University on Dec. 8, 2001. The combined point total record at the arena is 182, a mark that was set in Xaviers 99-83 win over St. Bonaventure University on Jan. 11, 2003.
Xavier broke the century mark in both of its preseason games. The Musketeers defeated the EA Sports All-Stars 100-63 last Saturday.
The Musketeers are opening their regular season next weekend when they host the Dell Black Coaches Association Classic at Cintas Center. Xaviers first game is at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, against Coppin State.
Xavier is playing four games between Saturday and Monday, Nov. 17, during the BCA Classic tournament. For ticket information, call 513 745-3411.
