All-American Sato leads Xavier to exhibition win
Musketeers take Saturday’s first exhibition game of the season 100-63
11/03/03Senior Romain Sato, a Preseason All-American, led Xaviers mens basketball team to a 100-63 win over the EA Sports All-Stars in the Musketeers first exhibition game of the 2003-2004 season.
Sato, a native of the Central African Republic who attended high school at Dayton (Ohio) Christian, scored 20 points to lead the Musketeers to the win at Xaviers Cintas Center on Saturday.
The teams exchanged the lead seven times early in the contest, but senior Lionel Chalmers hit a three-pointer just after the 10-minute mark to put Xavier on top for good. Another three-pointer from sophomore Dedrick Finn put Xavier up by 10 for the first time of the day, at 36-26 with three and a half minutes left in the opening period. The Musketeers led 42-36 at intermission. Xavier steadily built the lead in the second half and pulled away for the easy win.
Satos 20 points came on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range. Playing 24 minutes in the game, Sato also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds in the contest. Sato has 11 double-doubles in his career.
Senior center Anthony Myles led Xaviers efforts in the paint, scoring 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. The backcourt of Finn and Chalmers contributed 15 and 12 points, respectively. Sophomore Will Caudle had nine points. Junior Keith Jackson and freshman Brandon Cole each scored eight points, and Cole hauled in six rebounds.
Xavier will return to action next Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2:00 p.m. against the Upstate Basketball All-Stars at Cintas Center. Tickets are still available through the Xavier ticket office at 513 745-3411.
