Men’s golf Musketeers place 10th in Xavier Provident Invitational

Rain washes away second round of play, results from first round stand

10/15/03

The final round of the Xavier Provident Invitational had to be called off because of heavy rain, leaving the Musketeers standing in their 10th place finish from the first day of play. The results from the tournament’s first two rounds will stand as the final results.

Indiana University is the team champion, followed by Marquette University and Bowling Green State University.

Indiana’s Jeff Overton took home the medallist honors, his fourth tournament victory of the fall. Marquette’s Michael Bielawski placed second, and Bowling Green’s Heath Ziglar came in third.

Freshman John Streibich, who on Monday earned his second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award of this season, led Xavier during the first day’s rounds with a 1-under 141 after shooting a 69 in Monday afternoon’s second round. He was tied for 16th heading into Tuesday’s final round.

As a team, Xavier posted rounds of 290 and 285, for a total score of 575 that placed them 10th, but within five shots of fourth place.

Tuesday’s final round got underway as scheduled at 8:00 a.m. Shortly before the final morning tee times around 10:00 a.m., rain started to fall and made the course unplayable. Play was suspended at 10:33 a.m.

The event was the final one of the fall for the Xavier men’s golf team. The Musketeers are returning to action when they host the St. Croix Collegiate Classic in the Virgin Islands on March 5-7.
