Cross country teams continue their run of success over the weekend

Men's team finishes second, women third in tournament, while women's tennis, golf also score well

The men’s and women’s cross country teams continue their run of successes this year, with the men placing second of 12 teams and the women third out of 14 teams in the fifth annual Cross Country Only National Championship in Edwardsville, Ill., over the weekend. Drew LaMaster finished fourth overall for the men’s team with a time of 26:42.96. Jennie Illig led the women’s team for the third consecutive time this season with a ninth place finish and a time of 23:25.22.

The teams highlighted a successful weekend of University sports that included the women’s tennis team dominating the field at the five-team Bowling Green University Invitational, taking three of five individual titles and one doubles title. Junior Lauren Clary led the way, taking the title in flight one by defeating her sister and teammate, Kristen Clary, 6-2, 6-4. The women’s tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Miami University Invitational.

The men’s tennis team wasn’t quite as successful, struggling in the 18-team Ball State University Invitational. Senior Brad Meadors along with the doubles team of Jeremy Miller and Matt Zollman were the only Musketeers to come away with winning records. The team now takes a weekend off before returning to action on Oct. 11 at the Dayton Invitational hosted by Wright State University.

The women’s golf team had a good weekend on the links, taking fourth in the 14-team Notre Dame University Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Junior Sarah Sparks placed seventh to lead the way for the team, whose team score of 950 was 25 strokes lower then last year’s total at the Notre Dame Invitational. The team returns to action in the Wolverine Invitational on Oct. 4-5.

The men’s golf team sent its B team to the Hoosier Invitational at Indiana University, where it finished eighth of 15 teams. Sophomore Andy Pope placed fourth with a 54-hole score of 1-under 212. The University sent six golfers to the Hoosier Invitational, but the five Musketeers who won last weekend’s Northern Intercollegiate are in Rhode Island for the Adams Cup of Newport on Monday and Tuesday.

The women’s soccer team split its weekend games, beating the University of Evansville, 3-0, on Friday night on junior goalkeeper Andrea Garber’s third shutout of the season, before losing its Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Sunday, 2-1, to the University of Dayton. The team is now 4-4-1 overall.

The volleyball team, meanwhile, couldn’t stop its losing skid, falling to the No. 19-ranked University of Louisville, 3-0. The Musketeers are now 5-8 on the season and lost eight straight matches, which is the longest losing streak since an eight-match streak that spanned the 1996 and 1997 seasons. The loss also marks the first time that Xavier has lost consecutive matches played in Cintas Center.
