Xavier University Founders' Day to honor Lawrence A. Leser
Dinner event hosted for 1831 Society recognizes significant University supporters
09/24/03The 26th Annual Xavier University Founders' Day honors Lawrence A. Leser, retired chairman and chief executive officer of the E.W. Scripps Company, a Cincinnati-based media communications giant. The dinner and reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 25. Members of the elite 1831 Society, made up of top donors to the University's Annual Fund, will be in attendance. Each year one of those supporters is honored with the annual Founders' Day Award.
Leser joined E.W. Scripps in 1968 as a secretary-treasurer after 11 years in the accounting field. He was elected financial vice president of the company in 1975 and named to the board of trustees in 1977.
In 1980, Leser added the responsibility of corporate development to his role. In 1985, he became president and CEO and in 1994, he was elected chairman and CEO. Two years later, he stepped down as CEO, and in 1999 he retired as company chairman.
A Cincinnati native born May 15, 1935, Leser graduated magna cum laude from Xavier in 1957 with an accounting degree. He joined Xavier's board of trustees in 1985 and has served as chairman of the Nucleus Fund Committee of the Cornerstone Campaign, the BMX fund and The 1831 Society. He is currently the national chair of the Father Finn Society. His many contributions to the University include the Lawrence A. and Anne J. Leser Scholarship Fund.
Leser was selected to receive the Founders' Day Award both for his outstanding commitment to the Xavier community and for his dedicated service to society. University President Michael J. Graham, S.J., will present the award at Thursday night's Founders' Day event.
Members of The 1831 Society give $1,000 or more to Xavier's Annual Fund each year, sustaining the University and its spirit of philanthropy. Founders' Day honors these modern-day founders of Xavier and its mission.
