Campus begins weekend with search for the next Xavier Idol
Talent competition highlights weekend activities, while tennis, cross country and golf seasons heat up

Xavier students are lining up this weekend to showcase their talentsor lack thereofduring the auditions for Xavier Idol 2, a singing competition modeled after the popular American Idol TV show. Like a glorified karaoke night, the auditions take place Friday, Sept. 19, on the ground level of the Gallagher Student Center beginning at 9:00 p.m. The auditions are open to any student who wants to perform, and all are welcome to come and watch.
The top 10 winners of this years contest, sponsored by the and the GSC programming board, are awarded prizes. The grand-prize contestant wins a trip to New York. For more information, call 513 841-0203 or e-mail email@example.com.
Saturday evening on campus, the Men 4 Others theme house is hosting a movie night at 10:15 p.m. at their house at 3728 Ledgewood Ave. The group is showing the 1986 classic Ferris Buellers Day Off on a 60-inch television. This weekend also is a busy one for Musketeer athletes as the weather starts to cool down and their seasons start to heat up. On Friday, the cross-country team competes in its second meet of the season at the National Catholic Championship in South Bend, Ind. The womens and mens teams came in first and second place, respectively, in their first meet under new coach Steve Nester
Both the mens and womens tennis teams are also on the road, competing in invitationals this weekend. The womens team opens its season Friday at the University of Akron Invitational and continues to compete there Saturday, Sept. 20. The mens team is set for its second match of the season at the Eastern Illinois University Invitational both Friday and Saturday. The team defeated Northern Kentucky University at home in its season opener last weekend.
Also Friday, the volleyball team heads to Chicago to try to end its three-game losing streak during its full three-game schedule for this weekend. The team first takes the court against Southern Methodist University at 5:00 p.m. Friday evening. On Saturday, it plays a double-header, competing first against Loyola University Chicago at noon and then against the University of Maryland at 5:00 p.m.
Also Friday evening, the womens soccer team is in sunny Malibu, Calif., battling Pepperdine University in a 6:00 p.m. game. It has a day off before taking on the University of California at Santa Barbara on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
On Saturday, the mens golf team goes to Ann Arbor, Mich., to participate in the two-day Northern Invitational. The team had a strong start to the season earlier this month with a second-place tournament finish and several new school records set.
On Sunday, the mens soccer team travels to Valparaiso, Ind., to compete against Valparaiso University at 2:00 p.m. and try for its second win of the season.
