Team scores first goals of the season, beats Detroit 3-1
09/18/03The mens soccer team scored the first goals of the season Wednesday night, picking up its first win of the 2003 campaign with a 3-1 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy. The game brought an end to Xaviers school record six-match goalless streak.
Freshman Matt Kmetz led the Musketeer effort with a goal and an assist.
The game didnt start in favor of Xavier, with Detroits Titans (1-3-1) getting on the board first in the 26th minute with a goal from Ablaye Camara.
But the Musketeers (1-6) responded just a minute and a half later when a pair of freshmen connected for the first Xavier goal of the season, scored by Toni Skudrzik and assisted by Kmetz.
Xavier senior Chuck Morgan struck again just over three minutes into the second half, and senior Nick Thompson added an insurance goal on a breakaway with less than seven minutes remaining in the match.
Xavier junior goalkeeper Brian Schaeper made six saves in the match.
The Musketeers hit the road to play at Valparaiso on Sunday, and return to town next Wednesday to play at the University of Cincinnati.
