Baseball, golf teams set for postseason action
Baseball team sweeps La Salle to clinch A-10 playoff berth, while golf team prepares for NCAAs
A dramatic extra-innings RBI single by senior Ryan Schreen gave the Xavier baseball team a 5-4 win over La Salle at Hayden Field on Sunday and launched the team into the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships again this year.
The win gave the team the fifth seed in the playoffs, which are in Norwich, Conn. The Musketeers, who are 23-24-2 overall this season and 13-8 in the A-10 after closing out their season on Monday with a 5-4 win over La Salle, face fourth-seeded Duquesne University on Thursday, May 15, at 12:30 p.m. in their first round game. Earlier this month, Xavier lost two of three games against Duquesne, although the games were at Duquesne and both losses were by one run.
Meanwhile, the men's golf team heads to the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., on Thursday, May 15, to begin play in the west regional of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
Xavier is among 27 teams that will play in the regional. The teams earned the right to play by staging an eight-stroke comeback to win the A-10 Championship last weekend.
Freshman Andy Pope led the Musketeers in the tournament with a three-round total of 216 that left him one shot shy of the title.
The NCAA action will consist of three rounds in three days. The top 10 teams out of three regions advance to the national championships, which are at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., on May 27-30.
The Musketeers are making their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Xavier tied for 19th in the East Region in 2001 in the only previous NCAA berth.
