Baseball team wins six of last eight games
Team claims second place in A-10, while women's tennis caps best season since 1994-95
The Xavier baseball team is on a roll, winning six of its last eight games, including three straight over the University of Dayton this past weekend. On Saturday, the team edged the Flyers, 4-3
in the first game of a doubleheader, and then followed that with a 3-0 complete game shutout
by senior pitcher Greg Wiggers in the second game. It was Wiggers' second straight complete game shutout. Wiggers threw all seven innings and allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five. He faced just three batters over the minimum and stretched his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 innings over four appearances.
On Sunday, senior Mark Andres scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Musketeers a 14-13 win
and cap off a stunning comeback. Xavier spotted Dayton a 7-0 lead after the first two innings, but whittled the lead down and tied the game in the eighth inning.
The winning streak pushes the teams record to 17-17-2 overall and 8-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. It also gives Xavier sole possession of second place in the A-10 west division. The top two teams in each division earn automatic berths to the Atlantic 10 championship on May 15-17 at Norwich, Conn.
The teams next game is at home against Indiana State on Tuesday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m.
Also over the weekend, the women's tennis team
ended its season with a 17-5 record
, tying for the most wins in school history since 1994-95 after claiming fourth place in the A-10 championship in College Park, Md.
